Writers at Woody Point 2025: Meet Our Hosts
At Writers at Woody Point, we know that wonderful feeling you experience in the Heritage Theatre, the sense that we are all part of something special, the goodwill, the excitement, the shared love of stories and songs.
Our hosts set that tone —not just for the audience, but for the authors and musicians on stage—creating an atmosphere of warmth, connection, and joy.
The magic began on night one, year one with Shelagh Rogers, who in August will be returning for her 22nd festival. A beloved broadcaster and literary champion, Shelagh was the long-time host of The Next Chapter on CBC Radio. Beyond her celebrated broadcasting career, she has been a leading advocate for Truth and Reconciliation, served as Chancellor of the University of Victoria and is currently the Chancellor of Queen’s University.
This year, in addition to hosting, she will take the stage for two special conversations. On Wednesday afternoon, she will sit down with Angela Antle to discuss Angela’s debut novel, The Saltbox Olive. On Saturday afternoon, Shelagh will interview Katherena Vermette, accompanied by music from RASA.
While we’ll miss Tom Power this year, we look forward to welcoming him back in the future. In the meantime, we’re thrilled to have Elamin Abdelmahmoud, host of CBC’s Commotion, returning as a festival host. Elamin made his Woody Point debut last year, and it was obvious (starting with karaoke night….) that’s he’s one of us.
On Friday afternoon, Elamin will lead a conversation with Ed Robertson, with music by Matthew Hornell. On Saturday night, he will host our signature show of readings and music at the Heritage Theatre.
We are also delighted to welcome our dear friend and author Lisa Moore as a guest interviewer. On Thursday afternoon, Lisa will lead a special conversation with Ann Patchett, offering what is sure to be a fascinating discussion between two extraordinary writers.
Angela Antle—broadcaster, visual artist, filmmaker, and now novelist—first came to the festival as a journalist and quickly became part of the Woody Point family. She has been instrumental in launching our "Coffee With…" series, a relaxed morning gathering where audiences can connect with their favorite writers in an intimate setting.
For 2025, our "Coffee With…" series will feature RH Thomson, Shelley Wood, Kevin Barry and Linden MacIntyre. Bring a mug—or grab a festival souvenir mug—and enjoy a fresh cup of Gros Morne Coffee Roasters’ finest brews, or a special Firemen’s Breakfast on Saturday morning to enjoy along.
